Description
DS-15 MFR Short Barrel Rifle
The Dark Storm Industries MFR, or Modern Fighting Firearm, is a premium DS-15 Short Barrel Rifle built around DSI-developed components, full ambidextrous controls, American-made materials, and enhanced coatings. Manufactured and assembled at our Rockledge, Florida facility, the MFR SBR combines the features developed for the MFR series with a compact 12.5-inch barrel configuration.
The DS-15 MFR Short Barrel Rifle is available in 12.5-inch 5.56 NATO and 12.5-inch .300 Blackout configurations. Available finishes include Black, Flat Dark Earth, and Olive Drab Green.
Starting at the muzzle, the MFR features our W.T.F. Flash Hider. Developed to reduce muzzle flash, testing has shown it reduces the visible light signature by more than 20% compared with a standard A2 flash hider.
The free-float M-LOK handguard places attachment slots where they are needed while retaining material in areas where additional rigidity is beneficial. This reduces radial flex and provides a stable platform for mounting optics, lasers, and other accessories. A robust barrel nut also functions as a heat sink, increasing heat transfer from the chamber area.
The MFR handguard incorporates DSI's Chainlink handguard-to-upper tether to prevent lateral or forward movement. Two removable stainless steel dowels provide additional indexing and retention between the handguard and upper receiver.
MFR SBR barrels are machined from Mil-Spec 4150 CMV steel and receive a black nitride heat-treatment finish for durability and corrosion resistance. The 12.5-inch 5.56 NATO configuration uses a 1:7 twist, while the 12.5-inch .300 Blackout configuration uses a 1:8 twist. Gas-system length is matched to the selected caliber configuration.
The 7075 forged MFR upper features a serviceable steel pin for the ambidextrous charging handle to latch onto, along with a countersunk E-clip for additional retention. An additional rear Picatinny rail slot provides additional mounting space for backup sights when using optics with shorter eye relief.
The low-shelf 7075 forged MFR lower provides full ambidextrous operation for right- and left-handed shooters. Controls include an ambidextrous bolt catch and release, ambidextrous magazine release, DSI billet ambidextrous safety selector, and DSI ATACH™ ambidextrous charging handle.
The premium straight-blade two-stage trigger features a 3.5 lb. total pull and short reset. The DSI Mil+ Dual Ejector Bolt Carrier Group incorporates a 9310AQ dual-ejector bolt, enhanced Sprinco components, and an ArmorLube nitride/DLC finish engineered to reduce friction and wear.
The upper, lower, and handguard receive a Type III hardcoat anodized base finish beneath the selected exterior finish. Cerakote Gen 2 IR signature-reduction coating is used where specified to reduce infrared signature under night vision and IR illumination.
The result is a compact DS-15 SBR combining full ambidextrous controls, a rigid free-float handguard, premium materials, enhanced coatings, and DSI-developed components in a platform designed for demanding use.
